In honor of NaNoWriMo, I’m spending the month of November offering you all some writing prompts! Here’s the game: A few times each week I’m posting a picture and a setup. Your task is to write 500 words or less. That’s about a page (single spaced). If you want, you can email me what you come up with (linda dot p dot epstein at gmail dot com) with “writing prompt” in the subject line and I’ll pick a few to post on the blog. Please don’t submit your writing in the comments section, I’m not posting them there.
Here’s the task: A woman reaches into her pocketbook and pulls out this object. Now write the scene! You can use dialogue, but it should be <50% of the writing. 500 words or less. Go!
At the risk of sounding sycophantic, I LOVE your entry!
How could that be sycophantic?! I’m ALREADY your agent! 🙂 *bumps her ms up to read next*
Pretty evocative/powerful stuff there, Linda. Thanks for sharing! I started writing one as a warm up for today and it began to get very dark and scary, lol. Glad to see you putting something of yours up! 🙂
So I left a comment earlier but I think it broke the Internet because my screen went BLAMO! and then blank. Basically, I was giving you props for a piece well written and for getting a bit dirty, too. Much respect.
Oooooh, nice!
I’ve got nothing of my own here. Just wanted to say thanks for a rare glimpse into Writer You. xoxo
One of the perks of this being MY blog is that I can post my own writing in response to this prompt in the comments, even as I’ve asked you not to post yours! 🙂 Here’s what I wrote, and please feel free to email me what you’ve written. I’ll post some of the best at the end of the month.
SUITABLY FRICTIONAL SURFACES
She reached into her bag
pulling out
the strike anywhere match
And it really could
Strike her anywhere
Starting with kindling a fire
in the hearth of her heart
which had of late
grown cold and unused
Or sparking a bit of understanding
about the whys and wherefores
so she might see things in a different light
Finally the match might
ignite a flame
in her panties
with just a few choice strokes
Endless flammable
anywheres that might be a
suitable frictional surface
