Sixth grade was turning out to be an awesome year for Xander Cruz. Children
There’s nothing inherently wrong with this sentence. But as first sentences go, it’s not smashing. Your first line is a wonderful place to really shine as a writer and to immediately hook your reader. This sentence doesn’t do that. It’s not bad, it’s just not spectacular.
